1963 Buick Wildcat 2 Door Hardtop

Description:

1963 Buick Wildcat 2 Door Hardtop

"All new! All muscle! All glamour! The exciting '63 Buick WILDCAT! America's only luxury sports car with Advanced Thrust engineering now features three models, room for five adults, smart vinyl bucket seat interior, and an almost neurotic urge to get going! Very definitely for the sports minded male and his equally adventurous mate. There's a Buick Wildcat rarin' for someone like you to give it a brisk workout. Like, this weekend?" From the 1963 print ad for the Wildcat.

For consignment, a 1963 Buick Wildcat, showing an unverifiable 66,064 miles. A 2 owner car with a custom paint job, an engine that was rebuilt 4000 miles ago, and a fantastic interior that is well coordinated with the wild exterior.

Exterior
Silver fills the gap between the parallel trim pieces in front which then join to flow down the length of this big car, creating a delineation between the upper orange surface and the ivory white below in a style more reminiscent of 50's era cars, but looking unique and sharp on this quintessentially 60's body style. This silver strip is where the faux fender vent lives, an evolved feature that traces its roots to the iconic Buick portholes which were modeled after WWII fighter planes like the P-51 Mustang. Also in profile, we note fender skirts which are adjacent to another 50's design cue, gravel guards which adorned the flared fenders of earlier cars. In back, stunning tail light nacelles wear points that suggest fins without being intrusive and straight bumper that is flanked by simply shaped reverse lights. Underneath, twin chrome tips peek out and point downward. LED headlights with a halo now take center stage on the grille, all accentuated by the broad chrome bumper with ports for the marker lights. 15-inch Buick Rallye wheels wear orange lug nut covers and are wrapped in tires with an early 2020 date code. The paint and metal work are very good, and imperfections noted includes numerous areas of bubbling on the white paint down low.

Interior
The door panels start with pleated ivory uppers, an orange armrest, and an orange carpeted lower in a clean and showy presentation. The low backed bucket front seats revert to ivory and orange vinyl and aside from needing a bit of deep detailing on the driver's lower, the seats are intact, stylish, and attractive. The rear sets essentially meld two buckets as a bench and carve out part of the upper for a rear speaker, while orange speakers occupy the finished package tray. Lots of pleating and tuck and roll in back add visual interest and texture and a Buick emblem is embroidered in the center of the seat. A fantastic steering wheel that almost looks like two separate half circles over a slim horn button greets the driver and fronts an elegant and original instrument panel, surrounded by an ivory leather pad. Levers, an AM radio, and A/C controls are in the center while an AM/FM/CD radio is tucked in the glove box. A Buick tach accompanies the shifter in the center console and plush orange carpet spills throughout the car in bright, clean fashion. The ivory headliner is in great shape and the trunk is bare but painted orange.

Drivetrain
A less showy engine reveals itself as we pop the enormous hood and is a rebuilt 401ci V8, topped by a 4-barrel carburetor and rated at a wild 325 horsepower. A Dynaflow 2-speed automatic transmission is behind it, sending power to the rear axle with 3.23 gears. Power disc brakes now occupy both front and back to relax the flexing muscle of this luxury sports car.

Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with bouts of surface rust and general patina along with noted oil on and around the oil pan and transmission, as well as some seepage from the pinion seal. Dual exhaust runs along the X-frame and encounters Turbo mufflers before finding their way to the atmosphere in the back. Despite the surface rust, the underside looks structurally sound. Suspension consists of coil springs in front and a 3 link, coil springs and a panhard bar in the back.

Drive-Ability
This long, straight car is an orange dream, and the interior is a fine place from which to pilot it. The 401 starts up with gusto and just like that, we're out on the loop for a test of functionality and ride. It's a comfortable one, smooth sailing with plenty of power underfoot and that four barrel delivers the go juice to allow the 325 horses to run wild. That said, it tracks straight but is not a slalom car and orange cones would eat the ground if we were running in a solo event. But it is a fantastic cruiser and all operational equipment on the car including power disc brakes, lights, and the radio all work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

This is a custom colored 60's car with a bit of a 50's attitude. But it can't hide it, the shape and interior are period correct and iconically 1963, and this unique ride is ready for show and go. Solid engine, matching interior, and Buick's fantastic design make this car a winner, even if you're not on the podium at the end of the day. If you have, as Buick describes it, a neurotic urge to get going, well then, get going and give us a call.
