1963 Ford Falcon Futura Convertible

Description:

1963 Ford Falcon Futura Convertible

The Jet age is in full swing, the country is riding high on Beatlemania, towering beehive hair doo's, fur boots, and getting to the moon before the end of the decade. Unfortunately, we were riding low on the assassination of President Kennedy, Russia launching the first woman into space, and racial equality concerns. To mirror these times, Ford Motor Company put elements of design into the Falcon Futura.

There was nothing better than being a TWA pilot or "stewardess" as this jet set status was all the rage in 1963. And to emulate all this high flying high speed travel for whimsy attitude, we give you for consignment, a 1963 Ford Falcon Futura convertible. Just look at that side view and it's as if we are looking at a streaking jet flying across a blue sky peppered with puffy clouds to some exotic destination where you sun yourself, drink a cocktail with an umbrella in it, and eat fondue. 75,338 title verified actual miles, the correct 170ci inline 6 cylinder, an automatic transmission and a top that goes down...what more can you ask for?

Exterior
Look ...up in the sky...it's a bird...no it's a plane...no its the side spear and rocket styling for the front and rear of the car on this wonderful Futura. Steel panels all bathed in Rangoon Red with a wide red painted stamped side body spear, and a chromed trim spear flying from front to to rear on the beltline, beginning as a faux arrowhead vent and ending as a Falcon badge. The simple V shaped shaver-esqe grille with single headlights on either corner looks fine with its trimmings, and a shiny front bumper with very light dulling. A red hood with a chrome trimmed scoop shows early signs of some manufacturer muscle flexing, but it's still early in the game. A stained white canvas convertible top in good condition, is power actuated, and moves up and down smoothly with a slightly clouded plastic rear window. What a profile on this car with the top down. Pure jet age, I just cannot say enough about it. Even the tail uses jet engine round tail lights with half circle stamped steel on either side. Rounding out all 4 corners are 15-inch shiny Weld DragLite wheels and like new blackwall rubber from 2022. With all the good looks, we'd be remiss to omit the flaws in the body and finish. Cracks in the finish abound on nearly every panel along with large chip offs on the lowers that intermingle with areas of prior body filler, some dents and dings and areas of rust, some surface, some invasive.

Interior
It does not get any better than simple red on black, and this car is as simplistic yet stylish as it gets. Black tuck and roll door panels with painted black sills are showing some age but still look fab with the large beak-like chrome applique inserts. The seats mimic the pattern and use black tuck and roll inserts, and smooth black bolsters with gold piping to delineate the patterns. This pattern continues on the rear bench and all look right as rain with only minimal wear and seat compression. A very clean and very original padded dash utilizes chromed trim, and a stainless insert which is topped by the speedometer. Plenty of pull knobs for all the controls and I feel like I'm in the Jetson's flying car. A very nicely redone to original look save for the modern AM/FM radio in the original location. Black carpet for the floors all in great condition. Pure classic and looking original for this rocket ship.

Drivetrain
A lift of the short scooped hood reveals a symphony of colors in the unrestored bay. Satin black makes up the surrounding walls and a Ford Blue block capped with an orange valve cover and air cleaner assembly draw your eyes to this mighty inline mill. This engine specs out as the correct 170ci 6 cylinder and is fed by a 1-barrel carburetor. Bolted to the back is a 2-speed Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission which in turn sends power rearward to the 3.50 cogged rear axle.

Undercarriage
Nicely preserved, some steel panels have been added for beefed up structural stability. These are located just behind the engine and transmission. Unrestored and patina riddled steel makes up the floor pans and rockers, also have some steel reinforcing panels now installed, all part of the factory bracing. We do note a few areas of rust, both invasive and surface on the inner rockers and flooring. We also note heavy invasive rust in the rear unibody rails, particularly at the right rear leaf spring mount. Independent suspension with coil springs are upfront, and leaf springs are on the rear for the suspension. Drum brakes are utilized all around. A single exhaust system with a stock style muffler is in charge of the exhale.

Drive-Ability
A very nice driver, quick starter, and good handling car. Nothing is greater than the experience of driving a jet age car with the top down. There is just something that adds cool to your persona when doing so. Overall a fun driver, smooth acceleration without hesitation, and a great cruiser with all functions working as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

This is a nice car, ready to be enjoyed and worked on as you drive it. The interior surfaces are excellent, and the dash is pure original in a very clean state. A fine classic, not without flaws, gracing us here at Classic Auto Mall, ready for the picking. So, swoop in and claw this red bird of prey.
