1967 Buick GS400 Hardtop

Description:

1967 Buick GS400 Hardtop

"A phenomenon is arising in this country, and in this time. The new American sporting machines. They're not like European sports cars. Not at all. America's machines are bred to American driving; they're big and comfortable and roomy and muscular, and at the same time they're amazingly responsive. The epitome of this kind of automobile is Buick's GS400. A husky 3,500-pound machine equipped with a 400ci, 340 horsepower V-8 and a sporting feel. It's all the car anyone could want." From the 1967 sales brochure.

For consignment, a 1967 Buick GS-400 with 108,000 miles, with a numbers matching engine, owned by our consignor for 25 years who is only the third owner of the car. This highly optioned car retains much of its originality. No trophies or shows were listed by the consignor, so this one has yet to make its debut to the world. Will you be its next chaperone?

Exterior
This sleek 60's machine is bathed in beautiful Ivory paint covering its large panels and contrasted perfectly by the black vinyl top. Hints of performance intent are found in some mock accessories including the faux fender vents and hood intakes, while some added colored trim provides a cosmetic performance uptick including the red bar across the grille and of course, the red GS lettering on each of its four sides. The flying buttresses lead to a flat decklid over simple split tail lights and contoured chrome bumper with reverse lights carved in. 14-inch Buick Rally wheels wear 70 series tires encircled by a thin white wall, accented by wheel opening trim. The metal work, vinyl top, panel gaps, and paint are all in excellent condition and the only imperfection we noted was some cracking paint near the rocker panel.

Interior
The trim code for the interior color is 193 which is Yellow vinyl and it is a light shade, and could have easily been called butter mint yellow, covering the door panel in horizontal patterns interlaced with strands of shiny trim and a bottom black carpeted insert. A ribbed pattern decorates the bucket seats which are of typical design for the era, flat, square panels and a short back and the back bench picks up on the design in immaculate condition. A glossy black steering wheel sits on an optional tilt column and is cracked near the hub. It leads to a dashboard made substantial by metal trim and decorative features around a horizontal speedometer and upturned knobs and vertical levers for the vent controls. There's an AM radio and external FM receiver mounted under the dash and a fantastic, ribbed design all the way through the passenger's side along with the legendary GS400 emblem and Buick tri-shield. The 60's design continues on the center console with the graceful shifter in a metallic base, surrounded by black loop carpet and we're told original rubber mats. In line with the rest of the interior, the headliner is in great shape and the trunk with its plaid liner is spotless.

Drivetrain
The engine bay houses a spectacularly clean numbers matching 400ci V8 fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor and married to a ST400 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to the 10-bolt rear axle with 3.36 gears. Power drum brakes are provided front and rear. The bay is dominated by the red intake and block and even spots inspection wax pencil marks and the 1 year only "Star Wars" air cleaner.

Undercarriage
Clean underneath although perhaps not as showy as the top side, it presents with some typical surface rust but not errant fluids or invasive rust to note. Dual exhaust flows cleanly into stock style stainless steel mufflers then routes their way to exit just under the rear bumper. Suspension consists of coil springs in front and a four link with coil springs in back.

Drive-Ability
The light colored interior provides a bright cabin that's generally a pleasant place to be and this unusual color grows on us quickly. And so does the performance of the car which is solid, the 400 delivering good power and acceleration and smooth shifting. She tracks straight and handles road imperfections well and this muscular sleeper proves to be a wonderful cruiser. We note the horn is not working but all other functional items do as they're supposed to. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

You can call it Gran Sport but you won't find that emblematized anywhere on the car as Buick opted to simply shorten the name to GS after 1966. Interior options were black, blue, red, and yellow in 1967 and while we know 10,659 hardtops equipped with a 400 were produced, finding figures on interior color production is a bit more difficult. We're guessing most people opted for black. That said, the condition of this car warrants your consideration whether or not it's a rare spec. The Buick crowd awaits your arrival to show! This Ivory car with the butter mint interior really is eye candy!
