After the surrender of Japan in September, 1945, automobile manufacturing resumed. The 1946 Ford was part of the immediate post-World War II lineup of cars produced by the Ford Motor Company. After the war, automobile manufacturers, including Ford, resumed civilian car production with designs that were basically the same as the 1942 pre-war models due to the rapid transition from wartime to peacetime production.
The 1946 Ford retained many design elements from the pre-war models, including its streamlined appearance with a horizontal grille and integrated headlights. However, there were some updates and refinements to the design, giving it a slightly refreshed look. The automotive industry faced challenges in sourcing materials and retooling for peacetime production.
Due to steel in short supply because of the war, a stylish Sportsman Convertible was produced with side wood panels, it included an electric top. Woody Station Wagons were also produced, Ford's Iron Mountain Plant supplied the wood panels. These "Woody's" are extremely collectible today.
