Work began on the Shelby Mustang GT350 in 1964 as Carroll Shelby was wrapping up production of his world-conquering 289 AC Cobra. Ford wanted to burnish their falcon-based Mustang's performance image with a sports car that could compete in the SCCA's B Production class. The Shelby won the B Production class for 3 straight years and a legend was born. This was promotional gold so Ford, as the major shareholder in the Hertz rental car company, convinced Hertz to add about 1000 GT350's to its rental fleet, cementing the icon's place in automotive history. This well-documented 1966 Shelby GT350-H is a fine example of these legendary Rent-a-Racers. Beneath the familiar and functional scooped hood rests Ford's sweet Hi-Po 289 V8 that Shelby coaxed 306 hp from with the help of a Holley carburetor, an aluminum high-rise intake manifold, special Tri-Y headers, and a Cobra cast aluminum deep-sump oil pan. Additional features include front disc brakes, a 4-speed manual transmission, correct AM radio, correct Black paint with Gold stripes, correct 14 chrome Magnum 500 wheels wearing 205/60R14 tires, correct Koni shock absorbers, and a Shelby tachometer. This car appears in the SAAC Shelby Registry and has been verified as a genuine 1966 Shelby GT350-H (SVIN SFM6S1415, FVIN 6R09K172850) which was converted from an automatic to a 4-speed manual transmission in the 1980's. Because most of the restoration occurred in 1982, most of the parts replaced were NOS, not Chinese crap. Recent maintenance includes new spark plugs, new water pump, a new fuel pump, rebuilt carburetor, linkage adjustment, and fresh oil and filter.
