1968 Chevrolet Camaro

Description:

DESCRIPTION:
At Coyote Classics, every so often it happens that we get a car that's both extremely special mechanically and just as much so because of the story it comes with. This 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS is an extremely unique car, suspected to have around 22k actual miles and plenty of originality to boot. An original RS/SS Camaro, this '68 model has plenty of racing history and is confirmed to have had only four owners throughout its life! Popping open the hood reveals a massive, correct 396 C.I. V8 breathing through a 4-barrel carburetor, dynoed at 436 horsepower and 416lb-ft. of torque! Those fire-breathing horses are stomped into the pavement through a quick-shifting Muncie 4-speed manual transmission, which ensures proper throttle response and plenty of smiles behind the wheel. That power is sent to the rear axle, where this Camaro's wheels are spun through a GM 12-bolt rear axle. The exterior's laser-straight, signature "coke-bottle" bodylines are covered in a beautiful shade of factory-correct "Ash Gold", which looks excellent with a wonderful finish. It looks fantastic paired up with this Camaro's black SS hood band stripe and black vinyl top, giving this Camaro a strikingly aggressive appearance! With this Camaro's extremely low milage, the body and undercarriage is rock-solid with strong floors, frame rails, trunk, and door jambs. Opening the twin doors and stepping inside feels like stepping back into 1968, because this Camaro's interior is almost entirely original and in great shape! It features comfy bucket seats that are perfect for cruising, a full center console and Hurst shifter, as well as plenty of woodgrain trim for a little bit of extra '60s luxury flair! The car is equipped with a sleek set of 15" Chevrolet rally wheels wrapped with B.F. Goodrich RWL tires for a period-correct presence that makes this '68 RS/SS look like it just drove out of a time machine stamped with the year 1968. It becomes clear the minute you're behind the wheel just how well this Camaro runs and drives, with plenty of smiles to be had at every push of the throttle. With the racing history that it has and the extremely low milage, this '68 Camaro SS is the real deal. You're not going to see another quite like it, so don't let it get away! It's just a call away from being in your garage.

HISTORY:
This Camaro has a history so astounding it has to be put in a separate section! Bought new at Patriot Chevrolet in Hopkinsville, Kentucky by a U.S. Army engineer out of Fort Campbell, this '68 Camaro RS/SS was bought to race and race only. He had previously messed with racing Camaros and Corvettes in his free time as an engineer, buying the car when he came home from the service back to Ohio. In fact, the reason the original motor isn't in the car is because the original owner blew it up while street racing in 1969! With spun rod bearings, the car sat outside of the original owner's shop with the hood cut open and the engine removed. It wasn't out there long though, because the second owner drove by this shop, saw the Camaro, and immediately knew he wanted it. He went up to the original owner and bought the car without an engine for $2k, and funnily enough, at this point, the Camaro had only 2k miles on it! This second owner took ownership of the car in mid-1969 and owned it until 1981, building a 327 C.I. V8 with over 350 horsepower equipped with Hooker headers and plenty of other go-fast goodies to put in the engine bay as a replacement for the bombed 396. This second owner also intended to use the Camaro as a drag car only, racing the car for years at Thompson Race Track and the US-42 Dragway in Ohio. He did this with his wife too, running routine 12.9 second quarter-miles. The pair kept the car in fantastic condition, never using it on the street and only ever letting the car see rain if it was caught outside on the track. The car was kept with its "Ash Gold" paint, the owner never modifying the interior or the chassis. At one point there was a front end drag kit put on, but it was quickly returned back to stock. The second owner decided to give the car up in 1981 in like-new condition, estimating total miles to be between 10k and 11k as the speedometer and odometer were unhooked. The third owner took meticulous care of the car, and it remained in his possession from 1981 until 2013. He kept it at his parent's house on Lake Erie, only driving the car for around 400 miles a year because he was constantly traveling for his job. During this time, the owner had the car repainted to its original color. In 2013, after 32 years of ownership, he sold the car to its fourth owner with an estimated 22,800 original miles on the odometer. The final owner before this car came here to Coyote Classics owned the car from 2013 until now, testifying that he's put 1500 miles maximum on the odometer. He enjoyed working on his cars more than driving them, having a couple other muscle cars and two jobs to speak for. He never had the car more than 30 miles from his home, and between 2020 and 2024, he didn't put any miles on the car at all. Now, with all that history spoken for, the car is being sold in near-completely original condition with an estimated 24,300 miles on the odometer! This car's history is both fascinating and unique, a truly special Camaro RS/SS with a background that easily sets it apart from the rest.
