1986 Chevrolet Camaro

Description:

Super clean IROC with T-tops. 43,356 original miles. One recent repaint in original colors. Freshly serviced, including A/C. Everything works. Beautiful original interior. 305 TPI with automatic. The car you dreamed of as a kid available today at a very appealing price!

When this IROC was prowling the streets in 1986, the world was a different place. Muscle was still affordable and delivered the kind of bare-knuckle experience for which the Camaros of the 60s were justifiably famous. No electronic aids, no nanny computer, just a big V8 making tire-smoking torque. Perhaps thats why their survival rates are so low-they were inexpensive, fast, and yes, dangerous in the hands of an inexperienced driver. Over the years, the survivors have been modified, raced, and generally treated as second-class citizens. Thats why we like this gorgeous 1986 IROC so much-it hasnt suffered any of that. It remains 100% stock mechanically, shows just over 43,000 original miles, and since it was owned by an adult, it has been properly maintained, not abused. It was repainted in its original Dark Red Metallic a few years ago, and given GMs problems with paint in the 1980s, it looks about ten times better than it did when it was new. Theres a deep shine and a durable finish that should last years with only a modicum of care. Correct IROC decals were installed as needed, giving the car a proper look. Fit and finish is surprisingly good and the doors close with a pleasing solid sound rather than the rattling slam that youre accustomed to on these cars. Someone loved this car all out of proportion to its reasonable sticker price.

The same is true inside, where youll find a beautifully preserved original interior. Black fabric is a nice change from the usual burgundy mouse fur upholstery they usually used, and the funking striped patterns are 100% factory-issue. The bucket seats are still supportive and not broken down, and you might just find that the 80s Camaros were a lot more comfortable than you remember. This car is loaded with options, including cold factory A/C, power windows and locks, cruise control, a tilt steering column, and a Delco AM/FM/cassette stereo with graphic equalizer (remember those?). The carpets, headliner, and other soft parts are in excellent condition, while the dash pad and door panels are holding up beautifully. This car obviously didnt spend a lot of time out in the sun. The gauges are all operational, the windows zip up and down, and it generally ignores the fact that its nearly 40 years old. The back seat looks completely unused and under the rear hatch theres a good-sized storage area with the original privacy cover still intact.

The engine is a 305 cubic inch V8, also known as a 5-liter in 80s parlance. With tuned port injection, it delivered the kind of low-end torque buyers expected and proved to be a lot of fun on the street. If you owned one, you remember punching it and letting that muscular V8 do the heavy lifting, and if you never owned one, youre in for a treat. Now, its not as fast as todays 700-horsepower monsters, but its absolutely entertaining and does it without needing a race track to exploit its performance. Its also 100% stock, which is a rare find in one of these cars-no questionable add-ons or shade-tree mechanic nonsense here. It starts easily, idles properly, and works like it should. The transmission is a rugged 700R4 4-speed automatic, which always serves up the right gear and powers a set of 2.73 gears out back, making this a fantastic highway cruiser. The Camaros suspension was competent and includes a torque arm and Panhard rod to control the rear axle far better than the Mustangs quad shock setup. Youll find an impeccably clean undercarriage with no signs of rot, the brakes were freshly rebuilt, and the recent exhaust system sounds just right exhaling through a Flowmaster-style muffler. 16-inch aluminum wheels were part of the IROC package and carry 245/50/16 performance radials with lots of life left in them.

Documentation includes the original owners manuals, warranty booklets, advertising literature, and a 1986 Camaro brochure. It also includes receipts for the latest service work, some $1800 worth. Like I said, someone really loved this car.

80s performance cars are seeing some strong gains in the market as those of us who remember these cars when they were new are reliving our youth. Thats what drives the hobby, so it shouldnt be a surprise that a clean IROC Camaro lives at the top of a lot of peoples wish lists. If you want one thats been properly maintained, not modified, and with low miles, youll scarcely find one nicer than this. Call today!
