This was a new concept by Ford in 1954. The Crestline Skyliner featured a 2 door hardtop body with an integrated acrylic glass panel over the front seating area. Ford called it a "freshness of view". The Crestline Skyliner was only produced in 1954 and just over 13,000 were sold. The revolutionary acrylic roof design was incorporated into the Ford Crown Victoria line for the following years, but the 2 year combined sales were less than that of the 1954 Crestline Skyliner.
For consignment, we are in the midst of a well done example of a rare 1 year produced 1954 Crestline Skyliner from the blue oval, (although not sporting the blue oval badge!). It has very nice paint and chrome, a dealer showroom clear panel in the hood to show off the new for 1954 239ci Y-block overhead valve V8, (1 of 177 known to exist), and fabulous chrome throughout. A nifty 50's interior in white and Killarney Green, and a perfectly restored 239ci V8 under that see through hood which is an excellent compliment to the see through "sun" roof.
Interior A swing of the single door gives us steel Killarney Green uppers and white vinyl panels as pure as the driven snow for the solid upper panels and stitched white square pattern lowers with a center armrest and cranks and actuators in chrome. A like new white vinyl bench sits in a green tub and stretches across the font from door to door. This is fronted by a beautiful full metal jacket dash that has a green rounded over dash top and a drivers side crescent speedometer in blackface. Just below is a machined swirl pattern aluminum horizontal plate that houses the pulls, knobs and AM radio. The green steel below has more pulls and the heater and airflow sliders. A green steering column and white bakelite wheel with a half chromed horn ring fronts the dash and reaches for the driver. In the back is romper room aplenty with a pristine white vinyl bench with armrests under the panoramic rear glass. All this finery floats on a sea of black carpeting and is topped by the plastic slightly tinted Skyliner roof and white vinyl in the back portion. A shout out to the trunk which has pristine black felting and a near perfect spare tire inserted within.
Drivetrain A flip of the windowed hood reveals a perfectly preserved and restored engine bay in black and green. In the very center is a creamy white manifold and red valve covered and oil bath air filtration system 239ci V8. It has a single 2-barrel carburetor and a 3-speed manual transmission on the back. All perfectly presented for the windowed hood with supple hoses and wiring. Pin back a 3.90 rear axle spins the rear tires. All is perfect right down to the red "See Clear" windshield washer reservoir.
Undercarriage Some slight surface rust on the usual suspects, but mostly structural integrity to the nines and black paint. Inner fenders have some road dirt and the rear pumpkin is grease covered. The floor pans are nearly perfect and otherwise all is very well preserved. No drips for the engine lower end and I see independent coil springs for the front suspension and leaf springs for the rear to prove the ride. Drum brakes are on all 4 corners.
Drive-Ability The car fired right up and off to the test track where it performed perfectly. Bias free panic stopping, nice acceleration and smooth steering and handling was great for a 50's car. All functions were working perfectly at the time of the test drive.
A goer and a shower with some rare options, nice paint and shiny chrome for this 1 year 1 off Crestline Skyliner. The plastic is clear and the paint is all good along with the wonderful design of the interior in white. Snap it up as it will not last long in our Hallowed Halls!
