This 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Galaxie Skyliner is truly a marvel of 50s engineering and would make a great cruising classic car for anybody! In 1959, the Ford Motor Company completely redesigned its product offerings and those changes led to Ford winning the Gold Medal for Exceptional Styling at the Brussels World Fair. The newly restyled Fords featured a new highly sculptured overhanging lip above the dual headlights incorporated into the new flatter front fenders. On the new "Galaxie" models, which was an attempt of Ford to capitalizing on the world's infatuation with outer space, a new bright metal trim was added around the exterior of the headlights and an even higher level of distinction for this new top trim level. The Galaxies featured matching brightwork on the rear quarter panels as well further adding to that elevated look. 1959 also marked the final year for the Skyliner, that is, the convertible with a retractable hardtop that fully retracted into the rear portion of the vehicle. The hide-away hardtop design gave the Skyliners the looks of a hardtop with the top up and the open feel of a convertible with the top down. Originally slated for the Continental Mark II, Ford spent a considerable fortune developing the underlying Skyliner technology. When the idea to integrate the technology into the Mark II was scrapped, Ford's engineers retrofitted the retractable to its Fairlane models with the first year of the Skyliner being the 1957 models. Utilizing 10 solenoids, 7 high-torque motors, 610 feet of wire, along with numerous relays and microswitches, the retractable hardtop is still to this day a true feat of engineering. Of the nearly half million Galaxies produced by Ford in 1959, only 12,915 were the Skyliner model which makes this particular vehicle quite rare. Powering this '59 Skyliner is a 332 Cubic Inch V8 engine paired with a single 2 barrel carburetor that was said to push out 225 horsepower in its day. The 332 V8 is backed by an automatic transmission ensuring that anybody can take this classic 50s cruiser for a spin around the block. Exhaust exits through a dual exhaust setup that gives this Ford a nice throaty sound. This 1959 Ford Galaxie has great options! With power steering, getting this '59 Skyliner in and out of tight parking spaces is a breeze and makes this car an absolute joy to drive. This 1959 Ford is also equipped with air conditioning so that you can stay cool even on the hottest summer days. The retractable hardtop goes up and down with the simple flick of a switch mounted under the dash. Riding on wide whitewall radial tires with full wheel covers and Sun-Ray center caps, this 59 Ford has a great ride and even better look. The exterior of this Ford Retractable has been refinished in beautiful Wedgewood Blue with the retracting Hardtop refinished in Colonial White, which gives a really nice complement to the overall appearance of this 50s cruiser. The interior on this 1959 Skyliner is stunning! The front and rear bench seats have been reupholstered in Blue and White Vinyl paired with Blue Striped Nub Fabric with Silver Strand cloth inserts, giving the car a nice stock look. The dash, door panels and steering wheel are all in wonderful condition and appear to be in their stock configuration as well. The dash is equipped with a 120 MPH speedometer, temperature gauge, fuel gauge, clock and AM radio, and mounted neatly underneath is the air conditioning unit.
