2002 Chrysler Prowler
"It's last call for Chrysler Prowlers in 2002. First offered only in purple, Chrysler will offer its final run of 300 Prowlers in Deep Candy Red. "It's a color that will instantly be recognizable in the hot rod community," says Tom Marinelli, Chrysler/Jeep brand vice president. The Prowler first appeared as a concept car in 1993. It went into production five years ago as the Plymouth Prowler. It became the Chrysler Prowler when the Plymouth line was killed off in 2000." Wardsintelligence.com
For consignment, a 2002 Chrysler Prowler with a title verified 7,331 actual miles and one of just 301 painted in Candy Red Pearl. This garage kept Prowler in a one owner car and that owner just happens to be famed 70's drag racer Larry Lombardo who, among other accomplishments, worked and drove for local race hero Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins.
Exterior
What's not to love about this exotic retro mobile with open front wheels and color keyed fenders that turn with the wheels, all behind robust black bumpers included compliments of a federal mandate for safety. In profile, the chopped look is complemented by a swept back body, terminating with a rounded rear and accented with black gravel guards on the wide, rear fenders which offer a subtle contrast to the Candy Red Pearl, a dark shade of red. The wheels would not be odd to a drag racer, as 17-inch chrome five spoke wheels live up front and 20-inch wheels with much wider tires are mounted out back and they tuck under a dramatically wide rear end with flush tail lights, black bumpers, and dual exhaust tips. Monochromatic coverage includes the door handles, grille, and side mirrors and the steeply raked windshield caps off this sleek roadster. The canvas top and paint are in fantastic shape with one scuff down low being the only imperfection.
Interior
Factory stock is the name of the game here with black plastic formed door panels with switches, speakers, and door handle embedded and zero signs of wear. Well padded soft black leather sport bucket seats flank a center console where we find the chrome based shifter. A leather wrapped steering wheel shares its column with a central tachometer and the instrument cluster is centered in the dash, backed by a body colored panel and sporting white faced gauges. The center stack is where you'll find the AM/FM/Cassette radio linked to a 6-CD changer mounted behind the passenger seat. A/C controls are standard dials in black plastic. Prowler mats protect the low pile charcoal carpet while the roof stow area is finished in gray flannel, and everything is clean.
Drivetrain
Lift the tapered hood to find the clean 3.5 liter V6 rated at 253 horsepower, fuel injected and mated to a 4-speed automatic with Autostick that will allow for up and down shifting. Power is sent hot rod style to the rear axle where it finds 3.89 gears and power disc brakes are found on all four corners.
Undercarriage
Other than some road dirt, the underside is stock and clean with dual exhaust running through original equipment mufflers and then exiting with twin tips. Independent suspension on front and back is managed with coil overs.
Drive-Ability
We've said it before. Though the naysayers will claim a V8 would be great, Prowlers are no slouches and not only that, but they track and handle very well and are actually a blast to drive. And that's what we find here with this near pristine example. Naturally with a car this youthful, every function onboard works as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A rare color. A final year car. Some ownership provenance. An instant show car. And if you enjoy attention and lots of upturned thumbs in your direction, this is the perfect ride. Prowlers are modern hot rods with all the creature comforts you'd expect from a modern car. Long distances or short, this bold design and capable engine will get you where you want to go, in full sun or canvas covered.
