Vehicle Story The Bentley S3 and Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III represent the last of their generation from Crewe. Elegant, and refined, they were more ground-breaking for their time than they may be apparent today. Updated styling included a slightly lower radiator shell and distinctive quad headlights. It was said the press at the time were less than complementary and yet buyers, surely the ultimate arbiters, were far more positive, and strong sales followed from the traditional and affluent clientele. The standard automatic gearbox paired well with the powerful 6230cc V8 engine, which was now fitted with larger carburettors. A new power steering system improved low speed manoeuvrability and a Lucas vacuum advance distributor was fitted in an attempt to improve fuel consumption. Individual front seats replaced the split bench seat found in previous models and many had electric windows and seat belts fitted. The S3 still has the ability to turn heads and harks back to a simpler time, where empty roads and cheap fuel were the order of the day. Top speed was a purposeful 116mph, should you feel the need. Just 1286 S3s were produced compared to 2044 Silver Cloud IIIs.
