2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302
The Mustang Boss 302 is a high performance variant of the Ford Mustang originally produced by Ford in 1969 and 1970, alongside its more powerful sibling the Boss 429 Mustang. Ford revived the Boss 302 nameplate for 2012. The standard 2011 Ford Mustang GT's 5.0 liter Coyote V8 engine is enhanced and was referred to within Ford's development teams as the Road Runner engine.
For consignment, a 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 with a title verified 31,970 miles, a documented pre-production unit with a build date of 2010, car #18 of 44 pre-production cars built. Five were produced in Kona Blue and only 3 are known to still be around, according to our consignor. This is clearly a special car and comes with a show sign, a letter of authenticity from Ford, the window sticker and a track key.
Exterior
The dark Kona Blue is accented here by bright white Boss stripes which includes the C-stripe on the side that runs along the rocker panel then flashes back in a point, taking in BOSS 302 spelled out on the upside of the stripe. White covers the hood bulge and the roof while some simple white letters spell out Boss 302 on the deck lid, perhaps as a prototype test, but it did not make it to the finished products. Meanwhile, it's business as usual in back with the Stang's typical cavernous exhaust tips and mounted wing. It has a high flow grille with intakes where rally lights might be, but the production vehicles would wind up blocking that circle and the grille surround would be body colored where this car's is painted white. 19-inch Laguna Seca wheels adorn the car, each wrapped in low profile tires. Scuffs on the chin spoiler and one imperfection in the paint is the entirety of the flaw we find.
Interior
Nothing veering from the ordinary here with nicely designed door panels of molded plastic and stitched inserts and that same pattern flows onto the front Recaro cloth seats wearing Boss 302 embroidery and the rear 2+2 are compact and clean. Fold down the seat backs and you reveal Laguna Seca X-brace for extra stability, standing out with beefy white steel. Fairly standard fare up front where a robust steering wheel helps pilot this pony car, along with easy to ready gauges based in a turned metal type plastic background which continues over the expanse of the dashboard where we see a signature. The black knobbed shifter is your "right hand man" and in the center console which is also constructed of formed textured plastic. Down below, charcoal low pile carpet is in good shape, protected by fitted mats, and the foam backed headliner is in good shape too. The trunk, including the passthrough, is smooth and clean and covered with soft, gray material.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, a spotless and shielded 5.0 liter Road Runner DOHC V8 kicking out 444 horsepower and rowed to motion via a TR6060 6-speed manual transmission sending the horses back to the rear axle where they find an 8.8" axle and 3.73 gears with TracLoc. With a herd that large, naturally power disc brakes are found at all four corners. The intake is embossed with BOSS 302 and the cam covers are distinctly Grabber Blue. Not much is visually different from the production vehicles and this one also retains the strut tower brace that graced the bay of Boss 302's.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust on an otherwise clean underside that displays the Boss's quad exhaust system which split to either sideways through a low profile stainless system, or out the back where it meets a pair of mufflers. Suspension starts with Macpherson struts in front, a 34.6mm stabilizer bar, and adjustable strut dampening. Out back, a 3-link solid axle with coil springs, a panhard bar, 25mm stabilizer bar, and adjustable shocks.
Drive-Ability
Just think, there's a good chance Ford engineers and designers sat in this car working on the task of creating the perfect Boss 302! That's our first thought as we enter the familiar cockpit, ergonomically designed but retaining some of the heritage straight lines of early Mustangs. Seems like by car #18, they got the 302 dialed in because this car gets on it when we let this horse out of the barn! It also handles very well and tolerates imperfections in the asphalt. Days of "Fix Or Repair Daily" are over and every item of function in this 13-year-old car works as it should! For a little more than a production Boss 302, you'll have in your possession a piece of Ford history. Show it, drive it, or display it, this car has documented provenance that makes it more collectible than your average Mustang.
