Another Volkswagen known by sight... In the U.S., it's the Thing. Around the world, it has several monikers including Kurierwagen, Camat, Safari, Trekker, and Pescaccia. Whatever your memory recalls, the "Type 181" was a quirky little gem based on the old "Kübelwagen" used by the German military during WWII. Volkswagen produced these vehicles from 1968 through 1983, and almost 91,000 were built and sold around the world.
This 1973 Volkswagen Thing is a nice example of the design and shows well. The exterior is the classic bright orange with a great black canvas convertible top. The well-known "sparce" interior holds true to form on this vehicle and the vinyl is clean and whole with no rips or tears. Standard perforated rubber floor mats cover the floor and allow for quick hose-down cleaning. This vehicle also comes with an auxiliary heater located in the front stowage area.
In common with the Beetle, power is supplied by a stock 1600cc, dual-port engine with a single carburetor. The engine is mated to a stock VW transaxle with an IRS suspension. The engine starts and runs well and the whole package moves this Thing down the road normally. The drum brakes at all four corners bring this lightweight car to a halt swiftly and with good control.
These Things stand out! If you're a quieter type who doesn't want to be quizzed on the car you drive everywhere you go, this 1973 Volkswagen Thing may not be for you. But if you're the type who enjoys that sort of conversation piece, this car just might be the very Thing you need.
