1955 Chevrolet 150 2-Door Sedan
The Chevrolet One Fifty, or 150, was the entry level model of the Chevrolet car from 1953 to 1957. It took its name by shortening the production series number, (1500), by one digit in order to capitalize on the 1950's trend toward numerical auto names. The numerical designation '"150"' was also sporadically used in company literature. It replaced the Styleline Special model available in previous years. The One-Fifty was discontinued after the 1957 model year to be replaced by the DelRay.
The One Fifty was mainly conceived as a fleet model and little effort was spent marketing it to the average car buyer of the day, although sales were not limited to fleets. It was most popular with police, state governments, small businesses, economy minded consumers and hot rodders. Chevrolet sold substantially fewer One Fifties than Two Tens or the Chevrolet Bel Air in every year of its life. For consignment a 1955 Chevrolet 150 2-door sedan that is anything but pedestrian in its looks, ride and performance. This car has a newer 350ci crate V8 with a single 4-barrel carburetor and a newer TH350 automatic transmission as well as AC, power steering and power brakes. Bathed in red, and 15-inch rally wheels you are ready to cruise or go to your local drive-in with this 5,459 non verifiable mile example.
Exterior
Bright Red paint adorns body panels that have some of them seeing some misalignment in the gaps and the usual scratches and chips along with a few small runs. Overall the paint is applied nicely and we can appreciate that this car has not been dressed as a higher trim line. It still retains its correct 150 rubber windshield trim and lack of side dress up spears. The car appears mostly like it did from the factory as to looks with the egg crate grille, jet age hood ornament, and visored headlights. Bumpers are shiny, and chrome looks to be in good condition. Wraparound glass is a nifty element to this year, and the cloisonn© badge on the trunk is iconic Chevrolet as are the lamplighter style tail lights. Dual exhaust peek out from under the rear bumper and 15-inch rally wheels are on all 4 corners.
Interior
Step into the time machine Dexter, as we open the door, we are met with styling right out of 1955 but with a more contemporary flair for the door panels finished in tweed. A gray tweed motif plays the 3D game with smooth surrounds and a stitched red bowtie around an inset horizontal stitched panel. Shiny cranks and handles are all in for the beauty game as well. More gray tweed for the split back front bench and solid rear bench that works with the door panels to show off near perfection for these seats. Stitched tuck and roll for the seats cushions and backs make for nicely done inserts. A Bright Red metal dash with the iconic twin fan shaped fans bump ups frame the speedometer, and passenger badging with a clock. 55 Bel Air trim is used for some extra accenting. In the center is a bowtie punched pattern polished strip that houses some knobs and the vintage now digital radio. AC has also been added with chrome laden round vents scattered throughout dash central. The steering wheel fronting this dash is courtesy of LeCarra and sits on a tilt steering column. Carpeting is an absolutely spotless black medium pile and sitting in the center of the hump is a custom gray carpet and tweed console with a trio of gauges, a pair of toggle switches and twin cupholders for your favorite beverage. Above is a perfectly stitched tight headliner in gray tweed. Very Cool.
DrivetrainUnder the hood in a restored engine bay in red is a consignor stated new 350ci crate V8. It is topped with a 4-barrel Holley carburetor which flows fuel and air through an aluminum GM intake. On the back is a consignor stated new TH350 3-speed automatic transmission. A 10 bolt axle is now in the back for tire turning and smoking duty. All looking good with no corrosion or rust under here.
Undercarriage
Looking like new we can see plenty of black painted floor pans, rockers and body hangers which are better than factory in their presentation. The frame has been coated in jet black and is also on front independent coil spring and leaf spring suspension. Power assist helps provide the clamping power for the front disc and rear drum brakes. Dual exhaust and FlowMaster mufflers are on for spent fossil removal and stand out nicely against the sea of black steel.
Driver-Ability
This car started right up and off to the test track I went in 50's exterior and newer interior style. It runs nicely and handles well with power steering and the brakes were good with the added power. All functions were in working condition at the time of the test drive save for the brake and reverse lights not lighting and the clock not keeping time. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A better prepared 55 Chevrolet 150 will be very hard to find, and this one is certainly an award winner, outpacing its higher trim level Bel Air of the same year just with its attention to detail. A really nice example, but with an updated engine, transmission, and some snazzy wheels. A wonderful preserved example, turn the key, pull into the drive in, and rock and roll. Sweet..Vintage...Red Hot!
