1968 Dodge Charger RT Tribute
You can spend a lot of time scouring the internet looking for an original RT Charger, and spend even more time verifying it is a REAL Charger RT, so unless you are an autophile who bleeds 30 weight oil, why take the chance? Right here, right now we have a 1968 Dodge Charger RT TRIBUTE car that is in the throes of a restoration. Worth a look if you are not that kind of thing because a tribute car is more than just a badge.
Classic Auto Mall is a vast facility that houses numerous catacombs of cars, spaces of speed, and of course a mall of muscle, including this consignment which is a 1968 Dodge Charger RT tribute car. Yes it is in the throws of the tribute change over, with the 440ci V8 already in place, there are just a few details to get it up to snuff and bring home the fatter bacon that a tribute can muster. Here we go!
Exterior
Call me Plum Crazy, but when you are referring to the car color particularly this Charger from 68, this was definitely the "IT" color. The pony style, dual cove, lighted indented long hood is fronted by a black solid egg crate grille which has the hidden headlights and of course the R/T badge. The sides are coke bottle design all spiced up with the circular side front fender running light and dual coves on the doors, which have well minded gaps. We note bubbling, cracking and sanding marks on the lowers, evidence of underlying rust and prior body repairs. Pre crash test dummy bumpers are just as they should be unobtrusive and fit nicely presenting very shiny front and back. A wonderfully low slung but spacious headroom flying buttress roof line at the back gently lands in the smaller trunk lid that is adorned with a white stripe and Mopar Muscle Bee logoed wrap around the rear dual stripe and another circular running light. Chromed trimmings through the window surrounds mirrors and handles are just shiny and brite(work!) right down to the gas cap on the driver's rear quarter. Bringing up the rear are 4 round tail lights in a field of black, and some undulating bumper and rear deck to add highlighting. Dual chromed pipes emanate from the bottom. To finish this beauty off, it rolls on 15 inch Mopar Rallye Wheels wrapped in front by 245/60R15's and oun back by 295/50R15's. Timeless.
Interior
A swing of the driver's door reveals a white paneled door interior covering. It has a pleated storage bag on the bottom and a lineup of power window toggles. Seats are white vinyl mid high back buckets with headrests upfront and in back a bench of matching styling. A rally steering wheel and that is about as good as it gets, because the rest needs completion. This includes the dash, center console, and floor covering. A radio is installed but the rest is yet to come courtesy YOU!
Drivetrain
Under that purple hood is a 440ci V8 from 1968-72. It is topped by a single 4-barrel Edelbrock carb, and in back is an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic. The rear ratio codes out at 8-3/4 with 3.23 gears. There is a Flowmaster exhaust gladly accepting spent fossils via headers. Now that's some more crazy HP!
Undercarriage
Below we see very nicely preserved/restored steel unibody and floor pans. Snaking through it are dual exhausts in good condition. Power disc brakes are all around and suspension remains the front independent torsion bars and leaf springs in the rear. It's looking pretty much buttoned up under here.
Drive-Ability
In its present state, the car is not drivable so you should come by and have a look see for yourself just what you're in for.
A tribute and so far as it is complete, it's been done right. Paint does show a lot of bondo areas and subsequent bubbling underlying which is shown clearly by our professional photos. Undercarriage is solid and there is no invasive rust on this car, just the bubbles scattered about the exterior. If you want a good example with just a bit of extra time to spend on it, just come on down and stick your thumb into this one, and you can too call yourself plum crazy for that RT tribute muscle.
