1984 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60

Description:

1984 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60

"Introduced for model year 1981, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 inherited the 4.2 liter inline 6 cylinder 2F gasoline engine from one of its predecessors, the FJ40. With its larger, more modern body, it helped drive Toyota's competitive position in the emerging sport utility vehicle market in the US and abroad. In the US, it was replaced by the more powerful FJ62 in 1988." Thanks to Classic.com

For consignment, a 1984 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 with 160,163 unverifiable miles shown. It's a clean, blue example with a tidy cloth interior and the inline 6 cylinder under the hood. You've got the Toyota brand mixed with the boxiness of a vintage 4x4 SUV. Sounds like a match made in heaven.

Exterior
Medium Blue covers the rugged exterior of our FJ with a wheelbase that allows the cargo area to hang far behind the wheels and a lift that provides for some pretty good approach and departure angles while retaining its pedestrian form. Yes, this tall SUV would look good on the street in 2024 and has a coolness factor that's off the charts. Period appropriate stripes run tandem on the front fender then split to frame the side panels of the rig, then wrapping around the back with a bit of patina. Tall windows create a significant greenhouse and even with tinted glass, allow for light and visibility to endure. Polished 15-inch wheels wear LT tires and front fender vents along with rear pillar intakes add a bit of stylistic functionality, and a roof rack is in place if interior storage fills up. Imperfections on the FJ include the front peppered with rock chips, dings, scuffs, scratches, and a mud flap peeling away from the wheel opening.

Interior
The fresh looking interior begins with cloth inserts in vinyl door panels with carpeted lowers and all four doors are in excellent condition. That black and gray striped cloth continues onto the front bucket seats and rear bench, and they all wear it cleanly with the exception of some wear where the driver enters. In front, the no frills dash begins with a 3 spoke steering wheel with pure 80's horn buttons followed by a hard plastic bezel around three round gauges that relay at least nine points of information with gauges, dials, and lights. The center of the dash houses an AM/FM/CD radio, climate controls, and various toggles, all in a generally clean setting. The large hump on the floor is where you'll find the stick shifter and range selector, both with rubber boots on gray loop style carpet that also flows to the back seat where ample head and leg room is afforded to occupants. The headliner is in good shape and the visors show some wear. The spacious cargo area is covered with a rubber mat and vinyl walls and shows some usage but is overall in good shape.

Drivetrain
Under the hood, a driver quality 258ci inline 6 cylinder engine rated at 135 horsepower and fueled by a 2-barrel carburetor. A 4-speed manual transmission is onboard and can split power between the 3.70 gears on both axles. Power brakes are included on this big rig with discs in front and drums in the back.

Undercarriage
It has its fair share of surface rust but we're not seeing any of the invasive stuff. There's also only residual oil and no signs of active leaks. There's some grease build up near the ball and claw axle points, but considering this can be taken off road, not a major offense and we're not seeing mud or dirt clogging the joints. The single exhaust has a stock style muffler and exits out back on the left while surface rust encrusted leaf springs make up the suspension front and back.

Drive-Ability
Vintage SUV's are my jam and there's no denying the unique coolness that is the FJ. Plastics became prominent in the 80's and that becomes obvious in the interior, which is comfortable and practical and without unnecessary bells and whistles. There are gobs of headroom inside and the cabin is airy and open. The six banger fires right up and we roll with 2WD onto the blacktop where the tall tires absorb imperfections. This has enough low end grunt to get around our flat loop, and probably some hills as well and in true Toyota form, all functions work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Of the handful or so FJ's we've represented, this is the first FJ60 to grace our showroom and we think there might be room for growth in collectability for these uncommon 4x4's. This is a nice opportunity to get into a rust free and fully functional FJ for below what the average market dictates. And bonus, it's one you can drive without worrying about that first "love tap" in the paint. Off road or on, this is one that you drive and enjoy.
