When sales began to slide in showrooms, it became clear to Pontiac that their salvation would be to continue to build on its performance image. As they proceeded to do so and by 1962 the desired result of increased sales was a reality. Leading the effort was Pontiac chief engineer John Z. DeLorean who insisted that performance and styling would sell more cars. DeLorean designed the GTO, but Pontiac General Manager Elliot "Pete" Estes is credited with pushing the idea through politics at GM. Wildly popular upon its introduction, Pontiac created an instant legend with the GTO, a status that has followed the car through time. To this day, the GTO remains one of the most sought after and collectable cars of all time. The birth of the GTO represents the beginning of the Muscle Car era, a craze that still enjoys tremendous popularity with collectors today!
