Beautiful older restoration in timeless black-on-black. Period correct 327/300 with 4-speed. Upgraded with power steering and power 4-wheel disc brakes. Nice paint and bodywork. Runs and drives great! A very usable Sting Ray with all the right upgrades.
Code 900 Tuxedo Black is this cars original color, and there arent many better ways to showcase the stunning shape of the C2 Sting Ray. Elegant yet imposing, it highlights every crease and curve to make these cars look their best. And thanks to a very high quality respray a few years ago, it really does shine. This was always a clean car, so theres no evidence of patched up fiberglass or previous accident damage and the "birdcage" thats so critical on these cars is rock solid. The 64 lost the split rear window, which today we know was a mistake, but it is an overall cleaner design without the faux hood vents-that was the right call by GM stylists. Bright chrome bumpers look excellent against the shiny black paint and the finned rocker panel moldings add a sporting attitude without being ostentatious. Its still the most dramatic shape of the 1960s. Correct emblems were reinstalled when the paint was dry and theres very little evidence of use-no cracking around the headlights, no major chips or scratches, and a deep shine to the finish. They spent the money, yes, but they also cared about this car once it was done.
The black interior is completely stock and we cant argue with the well-dressed look of a black Sting Ray passenger compartment. Virtually everything inside is new, including the seat covers, carpets, door panels, and headliner, all of which are correct reproductions. The woodgrained steering wheel adds a touch of warmth, although it does show two cracks near the spokes-not uncommon. The gauges are big, easy-to-read dials that are some of the most attractive of the era, and they appear to be in excellent original condition and they all work except the clock. The unique vertically-oriented radio is a factory AM/FM unit, but wed suggest that if you need the radio in a car like this, you bought the wrong car. Its plenty thrilling all by itself. Theres decent cargo space behind the seats under the giant rear window, making this car a great choice for a getaway to one of the many Corvette events that take place each summer. The big chrome shifter manages a Muncie M21 4-speed manual gearbox, and its a joy to rack it through the gates with the engine at full bore. Even though its 60 years old, this interior still feels modern and comfortable. Thats no easy feat.
The engine is a HE-coded 327 cubic inch V8, which is a 1965 300 horsepower version for a 4-speed manual transmission, so even though its a replacement block, its pretty close to correct. Its been rebuilt to stock specs, including the 4-barrel carburetor up top and cast iron "rams horn" exhaust manifolds. No headers, no goofy aftermarket stuff, just a correct Corvette engine bay that even includes the factory ignition shields. Finned valve covers always look right, and details like the blue stripe hoses and tower hose clamps help with the OEM look. The only notable modifications are a modern dual reservoir master cylinder for the 4-wheel disc brakes (1964 Corvettes still used drums from the factory) and a modern Saginaw power steering pump. Both of those upgrades make this car a lot more user-friendly (the previous owner restored it for his wife to use). The 4-speed snaps through the gears, although 2nd gear doesnt like to be rushed, and we believe there are 3.36 gears out back, making this a comfortable highway cruiser thats always relaxed, not high-strung. A new exhaust system features correct mufflers for just the right sound, and the suspension includes new shocks so it rides surprisingly well for a vintage Vette. Factory 15-inch steel wheels wear original spinner hubcaps and a recent set of 205/70/15 whitewall radials for the perfect 1960s look.
